How long do I need to study for, to achieve my target score?

Modified on Fri, 24 Oct at 8:24 AM

The time needed depends on your current English level, your target score, and your current familiarity with the IELTS test. There’s no simple answer, but the key to improving is quality study time and a consistent routine.

The first step is to make sure that you understand the format and approach required for all the IELTS tests and the various question types found in them. Taking a full course in every skill in the Study area of the site will take approximately 85 hours of study time.

However, the total amount of time you spend studying matters less than making every session effective and focused. Try to set a daily or weekly study routine. Even short, focused sessions of 30 minutes can make a big difference if you study regularly. Active studying, where you’re thinking, practising, and testing yourself, is what really counts.

It also helps to discover what study methods work best for you. Some people learn better by watching videos, while others prefer reading or listening. You could also study on the move, using the IELTS FLEX mobile App.

Use mock tests and practice exercises from the Practice area of our site and then look at your results in the History area to identify your weaker areas, but don’t neglect your strong areas - they also need to be maintained. Keep track of your progress by noting common mistakes and focus your next study sessions on those areas.

Remember: regular, high-quality, focused practice will get you closer to your target score faster than long sessions with lots of distractions.
