It's important to do as much listening practice as you can. This includes IELTS practice questions, but also listening generally to improve your familiarity with spoken English, and to improve your vocabulary.
The main skills you need to develop are:
- The ability to listen for specific details
- The ability to hear specific words
- The ability to understand the opinion of the speaker
- The ability to pay attention to extended talks on a topic
- The ability to know when the speaker has moved on to a new topic
The most important thing is that you do as much IELTS Listening practice as you can. Try to set yourself goals for how much practice you can do each week.
A good starting point is to take the AI Mini Mock Test for feedback and scoring on all four skills, including detailed AI feedback on Speaking and Writing. Read the article to find out more and start your Mini Mock test today!
You should also try listening to podcasts, English-language radio, watching movies, TV shows and English videos online. This is a good way of getting familiar with hearing recorded English and expanding your vocabulary. It should also be noted that the IELTS Listening test uses a range of accents from English-speaking countries, but British English is the most common, so you may want to find media from the UK.
One good activity is to listen to a piece of media, and then try to write a short summary using keywords. You might want to use subtitles to help you. You should consider keeping a vocabulary notebook too, to make a note of new words you learn from reading and listening.
The best place on our site to learn all about the Listening test is in Study. Choose this option from the sidebar menu and then select Listening. Then you can then choose to do a complete Course or learn about a specific Topic.
