IELTS On Computer vs. IELTS On Paper

IELTS On Computer and IELTS On Paper are two different formats of the IELTS test. There is no difference in the content of the two test formats. They have the same difficulty and same questions.


Here are the differences in the format between the two tests:


 On ComputerOn Paper
Speaking
  • face-to-face

Listening
  • approximately 30-minute recording
  • Answers are selected/typed on the computer.
  • 2 minutes extra to check your answers at the end.
  • approximately 30-minute recording
  • Notes/answers can be written on the question paper.
  • Final answers must be written on the answer sheet
  • You get 10 minutes extra to transfer answers from the question paper to the answer sheet (and check your answers) at the end.
Reading

60 minutes

  • Highlights/notes can be made on the computer OR candidates can request paper and pen to make notes.
  • Final answers are selected/typed on the computer.

60 minutes

  • Notes/answers can be written on the question paper.
  • Final answers must be written on answer sheet.
Writing

60 minutes

  • Both tasks are typed.
  • Paper/pen for planning can be requested.

60 minutes

  • Notes/planning can be written on the question paper.
  • Both tasks are written on the lined answer paper.

 

Please note that some test centres offer both IELTS On Paper and IELTS On Computer tests. However, Some test centres only offer one format of test.


If you are taking IELTS On Computer, you should make sure you are familiar with using a computer keyboard and a mouse.
