In IELTS General Training Writing Task 1, you will be asked to write a 150-word letter. There will be only one question, you will not have a choice. The three main types of letter are related to the register (how formal your letter is). They are:
- Formal (to an organisation, or a person you don't know)
- Semi-Formal (to a colleague, for example, in a professional context)
- Informal (to a friend, for example)
There are also different purposes / functions of a letter. You should try to practice examples of these too. They include:
- Letters of Request (asking someone to do something, asking for information etc.)
- Letters of Apology (saying sorry for something you did, or failed to do)
- Letters of Complaint (expressing your unhappiness about a situation)
- Letters of Application (showing your interest in a job or role)
- Letters of Invitation (inviting someone to an event)
- Letters of Thanks (expressing gratitude for a gift, event or favour)
- Letters of Arrangement (making, changing or cancelling a plan)
- Letters of Information (giving news, giving directions or instructions, or giving advice)
You can learn about Formal, Semi-Formal, and Informal language in our Study class on this topic. We also have classes on all eight of the letter functions mentioned above.
Select Study from the main menu, then Topic and Writing Task 1 to find the classes on each letter type and formal and informal language.
